KWCA published the 1st ever complete map of community, group and private conservancies in Kenya. We thank our partners KWS, AWF, WWF for providing us with data on existing maps of conservancies. Our regional associations, Northern Rangelands Trust, South Rift Association of Landowners, Maasai Mara Wildlife Conservancies Association, Laikipia Wildlife Forum and Amboseli Ecosystem Trust provided additional data. Various formats of maps were sent to us by representatives of conservancies. Collating, geo referencing and interpreting data from these many sources was a herculean task.

The National Wildlife Conservancies Map 2016 enlists 119 conservancies, of the total 155 conservancies in Kenya. The spatial extent of 40 conservancies could not be ascertained either because they are still being negotiated or mapping has not been undertaken. Of the mapped conservancies 55 percent are community, 15% group and 30% are on private land.

The map also outlines the 10 KWCA regions that bring together the conservancies at the landscape level. See the National Map of Wildlife Conservancies 2016.

The preparation of the map is an important step in documenting the evolution of conservancies and building the case for conservancies as a mechanism of conserving biodiversity and sustainable community development.
