1. GENERAL INFORMATION

ITEM DESCRIPTION

Work Description: Website redesign, content development/placement, digital visibility strengthening, social media integration, donation functionality and website administrator training

Post Title: Website Development Consultant

Duration: One Month

Reporting To: AWCRK Secretariat and KWCA Communications Support Team

ASSIGNMENT OVERVIEW

AWCRK seeks the services of a qualified website and digital communications consultant to strengthen its online visibility and communication systems. The assignment will focus on redesigning the existing website https://conservancyrangers.co.ke/ , developing new content and functionality, integrating social media platforms, establishing a donation mechanism to support in fundraising, improving communication of AWCRK programmes and achievements, and building the capacity of designated staff to independently manage and update the website. The assignment will be undertaken in close coordination with AWCRK secretariat and with support from the Kenya Wildlife Conservancies Association (KWCA) communication department, particularly in areas relating to technical guidance, conservation-sector communication, content visibility and institutional alignment.

2. INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND

The Association of Wildlife Conservancies Rangers in Kenya (AWCRK) is a national unifying organization representing and advocating for wildlife conservancy rangers in Kenya both from community and private conservancies. Established in 2018, AWCRK has grown into a national platform representing more than 4,200 rangers across 12 KWCA conservation landscapes. The organization works to strengthen ranger welfare, professional rangers’ workforce, promote leadership, human rights, safeguarding, advocacy and recognition of the critical role played by rangers in wildlife conservation and community engagement.

AWCRK works with conservancies, ranger teams, government institutions like Kenya Wildlife Service, National Policies Service, Kenya National Commission on Human Right (KNCHR), Conservation Organizations and development partners, including the Kenya Wildlife Conservancies Association (KWCA) and other key stakeholders. The organization’s growing membership and expanding partnerships require a strong communication platform capable of effectively documenting and communicating its work at national and international levels. Communication is particularly important for AWCRK because rangers are at the frontline of conservation, yet their experiences,
achievements, challenges and contribution to conservation are not always sufficiently documented or communicated. A strong digital platform will therefore enable AWCRK to showcase ranger stories, communicate organizational achievements, promote women ranger’s workforce, share policy and advocacy messages, attract new members, strengthen partnerships, increase visibility to the donor world and communicate opportunities to its members and stakeholders. The website will also provide an important platform for communicating AWCRK’s work across the 12 KWCA landscapes, highlighting the diversity of ranger experiences and demonstrating the contribution of conservancy rangers to wildlife protection, community engagement, human-wildlife coexistence and conservation efforts.

The assignment is therefore intended to strengthen AWCRK’s institutional communication and visibility while complementing the broader communication and conservation efforts of KWCA and its member conservancies. Through improved coordination and content sharing, AWCRK will be better positioned to communicate the
contribution of rangers within Kenya’s wider conservancy movement.

3. OBJECTIVES

I) Overall Objective

The overall objective of this TOR is to engage a qualified consultant to redesign the AWCRK website to provide a professional, accessible, interactive and sustainable platform for communication, membership engagement, advocacy, visibility, fundraising and stakeholder engagement.

4. SCOPE OF WORK

The consultant will undertake a comprehensive redesign the existing AWCRK website, beginning with an assessment of its current structure, content, navigation, visual presentation, functionality, responsiveness and technical performance. Based on the assessment, the consultant will redesign/improve the website to provide a modern, professional and user-friendly interface that reflects AWCRK’s identity and its role as a national voice for conservancy rangers and in line with AWCRK branding guidelines.

A major component will be the refresh of the homepage, using AWCRK-approved text, photographs and organizational messages. The homepage will clearly communicate AWCRK’s mandate, key areas of work, achievements and impact, while providing clear links to membership, news, women rangers, programmes, resources, social media and the donation function. The consultant will develop a dedicated Women Conservancy Rangers page to highlight the contribution, experiences, leadership and priorities of female rangers. The section should provide space for ranger profiles, stories, photographs, training and professional development information, welfare issues, advocacy priorities and relevant activities. It should be designed so that AWCRK can continue adding new stories and information after the assignment.

A comprehensive Membership Page will also be developed. This page will provide information on who can become a member, membership categories, benefits, requirements, fees, application procedures and relevant forms. Where technically feasible, an online membership expression-of-interest or application form should be incorporated to make membership engagement easier. The consultant will create a dynamic News and Updates section through which AWCRK can regularly publish organizational news, ranger achievements, training opportunities, events, partnerships, policy developments, advocacy messages and programme updates. The existing or new Blog function will also be strengthened to provide space for longer ranger stories, conservation perspectives, opinion articles, human rights and safeguarding content, women ranger stories and other communication materials.

The assignment will include social media integration, linking the website with AWCRK’s official Facebook, X/Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn and YouTube platforms, where applicable. Social sharing functionality should also enable visitors to share AWCRK articles and news across social media platforms.

The consultant will establish a prominent Donate/Support AWCRK button and work with AWCRK to integrate an appropriate donation mechanism based on the organization’s approved financial and banking arrangements. The donation function should be simple, secure and user-friendly and should provide clear information on how contributions support AWCRK’s work. The consultant will further undertake basic search engine optimization, website security, backup review, analytics configuration and mobile responsiveness improvements. The website should be functional across computers, tablets and mobile devices and should allow AWCRK staff to manage routine content without requiring continuous external technical assistance.

An essential component of the assignment will be capacity building for the AWCRK website administrator. The consultant will provide practical training on creating and editing pages, publishing news and blogs, uploading photographs and documents, updating the homepage, managing the Women Rangers and Membership pages, maintaining social media links, managing basic website functions, monitoring analytics and undertaking basic website maintenance and security procedures.

The consultant will work closely with the AWCRK Secretariat and designated communication personnel throughout the two-month assignment. Where relevant, coordination and technical support may be undertaken with KWCA to ensure consistency with broader conservancy communication and visibility efforts.
