1.0 About KWCA
Kenya Wildlife Conservancies Association (KWCA) is a national landowner led membership organization, representing conservancies in Kenya. KWCA works to create an enabling environment for conservancies to thrive by advocating for the right policies, laws and incentives and supporting them through information sharing, and capacity building. KWCA recognizes that conservancies represent a strong mechanism to promote wildlife stewardship and custodianship by local communities and landowners that share land with wildlife.
As the national conservancies body, KWCA works to enhance learning, information exchange and documenting conservancy best practices and impact amongst its member conservancies, regional associations, donors, partners and the general public.
Objectives of Assignment
KWCA seeks to engage a communication consultant or a firm to edit, proofread and design its human rights handbook.
Editing and design elements to consider;
Target audience: conservancy managers, conservancy community members, conservancy associations, conservancy rangers, entities implementing projects in conservancies
Length: 40-50 pages.
Format: A4
Tone: Simple English, practical and action oriented, easy to understand,
Design: Visually engaging
Scope of work
The consultant will work closely with the KWCA communication team and will be responsible for;
Copy editing to make the language more reader friendly without diluting or changing the technical content but improving clarity and readability.
- While editing and proofreading, the consultant will ensure to:
- Retain content and objectivity of the original document;
- Maintain all the sections and sub-sections of the original document;
- Reword the headlines and sub-headlines where and if necessary;
- Propose relevant text to be given prominence through text boxes and other settings
- Propose any alternative flow of content of the document if need be
- Ensure text is not cluttered on lumped for easy readability
- Proofreading text and correcting spelling grammar and punctuation errors
- Integrate case studies, Key takeaways, do’s and don’ts and quotes where possible
- Checking the text style, readability, and adherence to KWCA writing style guidelines.
- Use gender-sensitive and inclusive language
- Select culturally relevant images or illustrations and undertake design work including tables, infographics, icons, illustrations etc.
- Integrate any feedback from KWCA team to finalize the handbook
Expected Deliverables
The deliverables for this consultancy will be;
- Submit first draft of the edited handbook to KWCA for review and feedback
- Submit second draft of the designed handbook for review and feedback
- Submit final proofread and designed version approved and ready for publishing
Qualifications
- A degree in Communication, Journalism, English literature and design.
- At least eight (8) years of progressively responsible relevant work experience in writing/editing and designing of reports and publications.
- Knowledge and capacity in human rights is an added advantage
- Fluency in English is required.
- Good knowledge of development and human rights issues, especially in community conservation.
