Kenya Wildlife Conservancies Association (KWCA) is a landowner led membership organisation representing community and private conservancies in Kenya. KWCA works to promote and strengthen community-led conservation, enhance governance, promote sustainable livelihoods, and amplify community voices at national, local, and global levels.

KWCA is coordinating land conservation organisations, conservation practitioners, national and regional networks across Africa. Under the banner of community led conservation (CLC), KWCA co-designing a community of practice in CLC to foster collaboration, enhance voice, agency and elevate CLC as a mainstream conservation approach to attain Global Biodiversity Frameworks (GBF) of 30×30 target.

Further, KWCA is supporting efforts to strengthen coordination among land conservation practitioner networks across Africa with a goal to enhance policy and practice for community and private land conservation, share resources , news and case examples and foster knowledge exchange and learning.

In Kenya, KWCA is playing a central role in coordinating partners focused on conservation in Southern Kenya (SOK) including greater focus on the recently subdivided Loita- Mara East sub-ecosystem.

To support these roles, KWCA seeks to engage a short-term partner engagement for a period of three months to coordinate these engagement activities.

 

Purpose of the Assignment

The purpose of this consultancy is to support KWCA provide a structured communication and coordination process that supports partner alignment across Africa and Loita- Mara East Sub-ecosytem in southern Kenya through regular stakeholder and donor engagement, shared information products, and CEO-level coordination support.

 

Scope of Work

The Coordinator will work in close collaboration KWCA staff to achieve the following core activities:

 

  1. Support in coordinating community and private land conservation networks in Africa
  • Develop and maintain an updated database of African land conservation practitioners, organisations, and partners.
  • Identify and compile key African resources, including publications, policy updates, events, and practice-based insights.
  • Coordinate and participate in relevant coordination meetings, webinars, and virtual engagements.
  • Develop one original feature article on community and private land conservation networks in Africa.
  • Support the organisation and delivery of a webinar, focused on African land conservation.
  • Prepare final report summarising activities undertaken, key outputs, outcomes, lessons learned, and impacts including an updated contact list for network contacts from Africa

 

  1. Support KWCA to coordinate partners in southern Kenya
  • Attend and support landscape-level coordination meetings and stakeholder forums in southern Kenya
  • Provide targeted communication support including partner briefings, talking points, and follow-up communication after key coordination meetings
  • Provide technical support in convening, facilitating, documenting and disseminating information on meetings for partners and funders working in Loita- Mara East
  • Support KWCA programs team in providing technical and funding support to pilot sites in support of implementing community activities in select communities.
  • Develop and circulate a coordination brief summarising partner activities, emerging issues, decisions, and agreed actions across the landscape.
  • Support fundraising efforts to secure funds for implementation of priority actions.

 

  1. Specific Deliverables
  • Updated Africa-wide database of land conservation members and partners.
  • A feature article on Africa Land Conservation Network
  • A webinar focused on African land conservation sector
  • A concise report of project activities within the contract period.
  • Progress report and feature article on KWCA’s project implementation in southern Kenya and Loita- Mara East documenting impacts from the activities.

 

  1. Duration and Level of Effort

The consultancy will be for three (3) months from the date of contract signing. The Coordinator is expected to dedicate sufficient time to deliver all outputs within the agreed timelines.

 

  1. Required Qualifications
  • University degree in conservation, environmental studies, natural resource management, international development, communications, or a related field.
  • At least five (5) years’ experience in conservation, land governance, strategic communications and stakeholder coordination at local and international levels.
  • Proven experience knowledge management and learning.
  • Strong writing, organisational, and facilitation skills.
  • Familiarity with conservation in southern Kenya and Africa is an added advantage.
